桜庭 一樹 Editorial Review
**** "砂糖菓子の弾丸は撃ちぬけない" (A Lollypop or A Bullet) presents a poignant tale that intertwines beauty and despair, centering around the emotional journeys of two young girls, Nagisa and Mokuzu. The narrative successfully evokes a powerful sense of loneliness and longing, as readers traverse the intricacies of their lives filled with turbulence and subtle moments of connection. Nagisa, who comes from a struggling background, finds solace in her friendship with the enigmatic Mokuzu, a girl marked by beauty and the scars of a difficult upbringing. The Prose is lyrical and striking, illuminating the characters' inner turmoil as well as their fleeting moments of joy. Reviews highlight the deep emotional resonance of the story, calling it a mix of harsh reality and surreal elements, leaving readers in a state of catharsis. Critics note that the intertwining themes of unreciprocated love, loss, and the harshness of life are encapsulated in the metaphor of "sugar-coated bullets" — beautiful yet ultimately powerless. Some readers may feel that the plot can be painfully slow or that certain story aspects may remain vague, which may yield mixed feelings, especially for those seeking a more conventional narrative structure. Nonetheless, the book is praised for its ability to evoke strong feelings, making it a worthwhile read for those who appreciate stories layered with emotional depth and thoughtful reflections on friendship and heartbreak. **
