Yetkin Amerikalı sosyalist Leo Huberman'a göre, iyi veya kötü olsun, karşısında ya da uğrunda savaşılacak bir şey olsun, her şeyden önce sosyalizmin ne olduğunun anlaşılması gerekir. Kitabın amacı, sosyalizmin anlaşılmasına yardımcı olmaktır. Kitabın ilk yarısı, kapitalizmin sosyalist açıdan ekonomik çözümlenmesine ayrılmıştır. İkinci kısmında ise sosyalist teori ele alınmıştır.
