Bu aşamada temel inşaatı konusu devreye girerek inceleme sonuçlarına göre temel sistemi seçiminin yapılması önem kazanmaktadır. Temel mühendisliğinin amacı, zemin özelliklerinin belirlenmesi için yapılan zemin inceleme çalışmalarını esas alarak yapı yüklerini zemine güvenli ve ekonomik olacak şekilde aktaracak temel sisteminin belirlenmesini sağlamaktır. Dolayısıyla bir yapı için arsa alınmadan önce zemin incelemesi yapılması ile yapı için yetersiz güvenlikte bir zemin olmasının (pahalı bir temel sistemi gerekmesi) tespit edilmesi durumunda başka bir arsa aranması yoluna gidilerek gerekli zemin iyileştirmesi veya pahalı bir temel sistemi için harcama yapılmadan arsadan vazgeçilebilir. Bu kitap; zemin mekaniğinin ana konuları ile temel mühendisliğini ilgilendiren temel tipleri, temel inşası için gerekli bilgiler, kazık temel tasarımı, zemin iyileştirme teknikleri ve donatılı zemin tasarımı konularıyla örnekler vererek, uygulamada çalışan inşaat mühendislerine ve inşaat mühendisliği öğrencilerine yol göstermesi amacıyla hazırlanmıştır.
